The card was a reproduction of a painting I did back in 1974 – oil on linen 20x 28 inch – it was sent to Jacob Kainen. The Everson Museum of Art bought the original painting. This is part of my mail art work – which is somewhere between Fluxus movement and conceptual art.
When I was a kid I read an article about Ray Johnson. The reproduction is done from an original painting that Johnson painted at the National Gallery ( Gilbert Stuart George Washington – I call the painting the Walt Disney GW). Then I had a show at the Everson Museum – then the museum acquired the painting and made a post card. I hand painted the background and made a holiday card which I mailed to the artist Jacob Kainen. That postcard ended up at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art and was included in a book called Handmade Holiday cards by 20th Century Artists.
