Chinatown, San Francisco

When I had an art studio in San Francisco, I spent a lot of my spare time hanging out in Chinatown.

One Chinese New Year I “saw” the windows across the street. A mystery – the quintessential red and green motif – epitomizing the hidden story of San Francisco Chinatown with its rich and exotic history.

The painting ended up in the Corcoran Biennial and received the Purchase Award 1977 from the museum.

Herb and Dorothy Vogel liked the original so much that I produced three versions in smaller sizes.  It’s in the permanent Vogel Collection at the Delaware Museum of Art.  And that’s another mystery.
